Dear Tailored Dreamers,
Allow me to reintroduce myself… This is the first of many notes that you will receive from me. Some of you know me personally and therefore know parts of my story, but to many of you I feel a need to explain who I am and what this Tailored Dreams movement is all about. You will hear me use language that I should start out defining now. A tailored dreamer is anyone who is in the process of aligning their lifestyle to fit the God-ordained purpose for their life, one who is attempting to live spiritually tailored. What does that mean though? It simply means intentionally seeking through prayer and scripture what God’s will is for your life, what your purpose is, and then living each day in pursuit of fulfilling his will or purpose for your life.
The other phrase you will hear me say a lot is “young dreamer”, this term is not indicative of age, it instead points to a person who is at the beginning stages of attempting living this tailored life, or accomplishing dreams. A young dreamer can be a 13 year old middle school student, or a 40 year old middle aged parent, as long as they are at the infant stages of dreaming. My job is to help young dreamers gain the confidence and habits necessary for living the Tailored Life, while helping provide inspiration and encouragement for Tailored or Slightly Older dreamers to continue along their paths. Tailored Dreaming or living a Tailored Lifestyle is not about arriving at a destination, it is instead a continuous journey, we are constantly learning, achieving, and then setting new goals.
As far as my approach, I’d say I’m somewhere between a Joel Olsten and Sean Carter (Jay Z). I encourage you to have a fearless faith in God, and direct you towards living your best life now, but I believe it is something to be said about hard work, and ambition. In the book of James the 2nd chapter and the 17th verse it says “In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.” It is one thing to believe you can do it, but doing it is an entirely different matter. Usually people talk themselves out of their dreams. As quick as they imagine the moment they’ve accomplished it, they begin to list the reasons that the dream is impossible. Jay Z says in the song Diamonds of Sierra that he featured on with Kanye West, that “Difficult takes a day, impossible takes a week”. That’s the attitude it takes. It is knowing, that you may not be qualified to achieve it, maybe you aren’t as talented as others who have tried and failed, but you serve a God who is big enough to give you what it takes to accomplish it. “I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” Philippians 4:13 If you have faith enough to say it, to dream it, and then attempt it; then God is big enough to give you the strength to accomplish it.
Don’t let your past be the barrier that keeps you from your future. One of the reasons I love using Hip Hop lyrics to illustrate scriptures is because growing up it was easy for me to identify with certain rappers and the way they painted a picture of life with their words, and then once I gave my life to
Christ I really understood the parallel. I saw that while I could relate to lyrics like Tupac’s “Papaz Song,” I had to play catch by myself, what a sorry sight, a pitiful plight so I pray for a starry night, please send me a pops before puberty, the things I wouldn’t do to see a piece of family unity. I related to that because I as an adolescent didn’t have a relationship with my father, but when I found God I learned from scripture that my story didn’t have to end like that. I didn’t have to be bitter; it could and would get better. In the 27th Psalm and the 10th verse it said “When my father and my mother forsake me, then the Lord will take me up.” I allowed the Lord to design and light my path, and now I have a relationship not only with my heavenly father but also with my biological father. I thought that was impossible, but with faith in God and a lot of work we were able to become close. It didn’t happen overnight, but it did happen. That is the power of tailored dreaming; it gives the power to transform what you are hoping for to God. Tailored Dreaming will help you realize that you’re not a prisoner to your past, but instead, an architect of your future.
Thank you for joining us on this journey of living the Tailored Life, tell a friend, you know every trip is more fun when you can travel with friends. Lastly, I encourage to let nothing separate you from the life God has waiting for you. And when it gets tough and it will, I want you to remember that you are uniquely qualified to be you, and we need you, the world needs you to be you. Flaws and all, we are depending on you to do your part in birthing your dream, so that our world will be better, because you lived your Tailored Dream.
“Remind yourself, nobody built like you, you design yourself” – Jay Z
